A Mandarin-speaking Colonel does cartwheels for KFC coffee

A mainland campaign by Wieden+Kennedy Shanghai sought to convince consumers that KFC coffee is legit.

For this campaign that ran from August 20 through September 4, Wieden+Kennedy Shanghai mashed up a well-known Chinese folk song with a dash of Kentucky Bluegrass-stylings (and banjos) to concoct a jaunty little number touting the brand's coffee (see video below).

In addition, W+K redesigned the company's coffee cups, designed in-store takeovers and OOH ads, and created chicken-drumstick stirrers (see gallery above).

Ad Nut likes this because while it has a touch of the typical KFC madness, that's not all it is. The brand's many and varied gimmicks are usually fun and only sometimes outrageously ill-advised. But for a change it's refreshing to see reliance on tried-and-true advertising techniques like a catchy tune, a smiling, dancing mascot and eye-catching ads with solid, simple copy. And Ad Nut really wants one of those stirrers.
