Danone set to launch Japanese media review

TOKYO - Danone is preparing to call a review of its media planning and buying account in Japan, currently handled by Hakuhodo and believed to be worth an estimated US$32 million.

Danone set to launch Japanese media review
Sources close to the account have indicated that the French food giant is looking for greater cost efficiency in its media investment. The company has yet to finalise a list of agencies to compete for the business. GroupM, Universal McCann and Carat are expected to participate in addition to Hakuhodo.

Separately, Danone recently announced that it would call a pitch for its China media account, currently handled by OMD.

In Japan, the company’s principal water brand is Evian. It also works alongside Kirin and Mitsubishi to import, market and distribute the Volvic brand.

The firm bought control of its joint venture, Calpis Ajinomoto Danone (CAD) two years ago. The move was reportedly designed to enable stronger focus on dairy products offering apparent health benefits, such as Bio yoghurt.
