In 2016, eight out of 10 of the year’s most popular ads on YouTube came from brands based in Southeast Asia (last year half of the ads came from either Thailand or Vietnam). What can brands in other countries learn from these video stars? The ads in the top two positions, both from Vietnam, make a general point: Tide Vietnam and Vinamilk know that on YouTube, audiences must be entertained before they can be sold to. To do this, both brands created an all-singing all-dancing extravaganza, complete with karaoke-style lyrics on screen. But the secret to success is not just about songs, the leaderboard shows a great mix of styles—from computer-generated animation (Nestle PH) to comedy—and lengths—from Tokopedia’s short-but-sweet 30-second ad to Mirinda’s almost-14-minute epic.
