MTR iPhone App offers passengers more entertainment

HONG KONG - MTR unveil its new iPhone App offerings yesterday at Kowloon Bay HITEC yesterday afternoon, inviting Cantonese Opera and witty showbiz star Law Kar Ying as guest presenter and over 400 MTR Club members to the event.

Available for free download from the Apple App Store, iPhone users will have instant access to details about the MTR network’s services.

When using the app, passengers can turn on the augmented reality browser and use their camera to scan the areas around MTR stations. As users point the camera in different directions, information about landmarks, entertainment venues and dining outlets located within 500 metres will appear on the screen.

Google Maps is also integrated with the browser, making it easy for passengers to reach their location and discover new spots while on the go.

“This brand-new Search en Route function will take you to landmarks and other entertainment and dinning hotspots within 500 metres of your location via your viewfinder and ground positioning,” explained Annie Leung, the MTR Corporation’s senior manager of sales and marketing. "Passengers with iPone can enjoy the fun of sharing photo and updates instantly.”

The Enhanced MTR Mobile will enable iPhone users to browse useful details about their journeys – including fares, timing, interchange points, MTR shops and other station facilities – while in offline mode. 

MTR Club members will be able to log on to enjoy all the latest promotions and check their bonus points balance and redeem them while they are on the road.

To allow more passengers to experience the fun and usefulness of MTR Mobile, an iPad version of the app will be available for download from the Apple App Store this Autumn.

TwoHundred is the creative agency for this event along with PR agency partner Pro Marketing, OMD is the media agency and Cherrypicks is the technology partner for the MTR iPhone App project.

MTR has also launched a branding campaign this month in memory of the first railway built in Hong Kong.
