UNAIDS launches Chinese AIDS awareness initiatives

BEIJING - The Joint United Nations Programme for HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and Ogilvy PR Worldwide have launched an educational initiative to raise awareness of the growing threat of HIV/AIDS in mainland China, releasing two reports that offer relevant statistics and address the human aspects of the disease.

UNAIDS launches Chinese AIDS awareness initiatives
Earlier this week in Shanghai, UNAIDS released its UNAIDS Outlook 2010 report and the AIDS Epidemic Update 2009 companion report, both of which focus on global and regional data, estimates and trends of HIV/AIDS and offer solutions on how this data can best be used to combat the disease’s spread.

According to Ogilvy PR, the studies’ release mark the first time that UNAIDS has launched its annual report in China, and was deliberate launched ahead of World AIDS Day on 1 December.

To accompany the reports’ launch, UNAIDS, in partnership with the Ministry of Health and the Marie Stopes International 'Positive Talks' project, will host a press conference today in Beijing under the banner ‘Stigma and discrimination experienced by people living with HIV in China’. At the event, the organisations will release their The China Stigma Index Report, which contains data on AIDS-related stigma and discrimination and addresses ways to alleviate these problems.

The index additionally features goodwill ambassador Yao Ming and, for the first time n a public campaign in China, people who are living with HIV.

The report is based on a survey of more than 2,000 respondents living with HIV in China.

The live events in Shanghai and Beijing, as well as additional media activities, will be managed by Ogilvy PR.

“Releasing the UNAIDS reports here speaks volumes about China’s willingness and desire to cooperate with international organisations to educate the public and enhance understanding of this issue which affects the lives of so many people in China and around the world,” president of Ogilvy & Mather Group Beijing and Ogilvy PR China Scott Kronick said.

Ogilvy PR Worldwide was awarded gold for Asia-Pacific Network of the Year at the Asia-Pacific PR Awards, held at Hong Kong's exclusive China Club.
