Tencent calls creative pitch for newly formed online media group

BEIJING - Hong Kong-listed China internet giant Tencent has called a creative pitch for its new Online Media Group, with Ogilvy, JWT and Grey among those pitching for the business in presentations taking place today, according to industry sources.

A source close to Tencent said the brief for the creative pitch focuses on increasing the perceived value of The Online Media Group's products, which include the advertising-supported portal website qq.com, its video business, and the company's Weibo.

Tencent restructured in May, changing its original eight business units into six business groups. The other groups focus on corporate development, interactive entertainment, mobile internet, social networking, and technology and engineering.
 
Tencent also set up Tencent e-commerce Holding Company (ECC), a wholly owned subsidiary, to focus on managing its fledging e-commerce business.
 
Tencent chief executive Ma Huateng said in a press release that the reorganization move will help the company "incubate new businesses," adding it "will pool certain of our technology and engineering teams to further develop core technologies and operational platforms so as to better support future business growth."

It added that Ren Yuxin, previously president of Tencent's interactive entertainment busines, become chief operating officer and head its media and social networking groups. Seng Yee Lau is the executive in charge of the Online Media Group.

Also reported in May, Jeff Han, former vice-president marketing for Asia-Pacific for Yahoo, has joined Tencent as general manager, marketing department, online media. Han has relocated to Beijing from Taipei in May.

Meanwhile, Grey is currently working on Tencent’s 2012 London Olympic campaign.Tencent has opened its Tencent Chinese Tea House for the London Olympic Games. The Chinese Tea House is a media platform providing diverse Games-related information and interactive content that will support more than 1.2 billion audience interactions during the Olympics.
