The agency was recently responsible for strategy during the application phase, and also for the unsuccessful Tokyo 2016 Olympic bid campaign. Tokyo was confirmed to have made the shortlist of contenders to host the 2020 Olympic Games on Thursday.

According to a statement from Weber Shandwick, Tokyo is “back on stage with improved plans, making sure the lessons of the past are applied and confident in the strength of the new bid”.

The agency said it would aim to “deliver a legacy of long-term benefits for Tokyo, Japan and international sport”. It has also been responsible for communications strategy for Olympic bid efforts for Beijing 2008, Sochi 2013 and Munich 2018.
