CHINA - Sony Ericsson has partnered with China's largest mobile operator, China Mobile, to launch its first smartphone to support the country's SCMDA network, in a bid to strengthen its position in the region.

Sony Ericsson targets Chinese mobile market as Vodafone 'prepares exit'

The Sony Ericsson A8i supports China Mobile's SCMDA network and WLAN connection, and links with China Mobile's entertainment download service, so users can download local music to the device using its TrackID music function.

Berton Norberg, president and chief executive of Sony Ericsson, said, "China is a hugely important market for Sony Ericsson and we are committed to maintaining our strong position and driving growth by continually introducing new and exciting products into this market."

Sony Ericsson's move into China coincides with reports that Vodafone is intending to unwind its investment in the country.

According to The Sunday Times, Vodafone is preparing to raise US$6.15 billion (£4 billion) by selling its shares in China Mobile. The company, which initially bought a stake in China Mobile in 2000, now accounts for almost a fifth of China Mobile's free float.

Vodafone declined to comment on the reports.
