Paypal, Facebook partner on new payment service

GLOBAL - Paypal partners with Facebook for roll-out of new micropayment service for easier purchase of digital goods and services.

Paypal, Facebook partner on new payment service

Paypal has unveiled a new micro-payments system which allows customers to buy digital goods and content with as little as two clicks, without having to leave a game, news, video or media site.

Facebook is the online payment company’s initial partner for the roll-out, and Paypal’s service allows purchase of digital goods like Farm Cash, and could bring virtual payments to Facebook's 500 million users and its gamers.

The service, which will be available later this year, was described to be as simple as dropping a coin into a slot to buy a newspaper or play a game.

A statement released by Paypal said that the new system also allows merchants and publishers to get access to their funds quicker. Paypal said it would charge five per cent plus five cents for purchases under US$12.

The company said that a number of other companies have signed up for its micro-payment service for digital goods, including Autosport.com, FT.com, GigaOM, Justin.tv, Ooyala, Plimus, Tagged, Tyler Projects and Ustream.
