Car brands dominated the line-up of ads, which are estimated to have generated in the region of US$200 million for TV channel Fox.
According to USA Today's Super Bowl Ad Meter, charting the reactions of 282 volunteers during the Super Bowl, Bud Light's 'Dog sitter' and Doritos' 'Pug attack' tied in first place as the most popular ads.
One ad that didn't do so well was Groupon's much-hyped ad highlighting Tibet's problems to promote the site. The ad, created by Crispin Porter & Bogusky, has set off a major backlash online and furious Twitter messages condemning the inappropriate nature of what was intended to be a light-hearted commercial.
Marketing blogger Rohit Bhargava said, "Groupon seems to have achieved the unique feat of paying US$3 million to lose customers who previously loved them."
On their blog, Groupon responded by saying their "ads highlight the often trivial nature of stuff on Groupon when juxtaposed against bigger world issues, making fun of Groupon."
"The last thing we wanted was to offend our customers – it’s bad business and it’s not where our hearts are."
