MediaCorp links with telcos to trial mobile TV

SINGAPORE - MediaCorp has struck a deal with Singapore's big three telco operations M1, SingTel and StarHub to trial mob-casting its top-rating TV programmes such as the Beijing Olympics and Barclays Premier League.

MediaCorp links with telcos to trial mobile TV

The three telcos and the national broadcaster will jointly conduct a consumer mobile TV trial using Digital Video Broadcasting-Handheld (DVB-H) technology from next month.

Up to 300 customers will participate in the trial to watch a variety of TV Programmes, including Olympics coverage, Barclays Premier League footage from StarHub's Football Channel and Cantonese movies on SingTel mio TV’s Mei Ah Movies Channel.

The convergence of broadcast media and telecommunications technologies is ably demonstrated on the DVB-H platform and this trial with our business and consumer partners will help us bridge the vital human factor," said Neil Montefiore, CEO of M1.

"We hope to better understand consumer preferences and behaviour that will enable us to define realistic service standards for the exciting new world of mobile TV.

MediaCorp pioneered DVB-H consumer trials in Singapore some four years ago," said Lucas Chow (pictured), CEO of MediaCorp. "From our past experience, the availability of handsets is paramount to the service taking off. I‘m happy that our efforts to have all three Singapore telcos onboard will lead to better quality and wider choice of services for our customers and, at the same time, allow us to explore viable new business models.
