Dentsu recreates 'Gift of the Magi' for Japanese retailer Shaddy

Cinematic ad shot in Hungary by Dentsu and Flatpack Films.

An international effort shot with a Scorsese-level attention to period details, the above film adapts 'The Gift of the Magi' to promote Shaddy, a Japanese gift retailer.

Ad Nut won't discuss the details of the story, so as not to bore those who know it or spoil it for those who don't. Suffice to say it remains sweet and meaningful more than 100 years after its original publication, and converts well to a short film set in Hungary—and not at Christmas time.

Dentsu worked with Hungary's Flatpack Films, Japanese production company Taiyo Kikaku and Hamburg-based production company Dokuwa Communications on the shoot, which took place in the city of Esztergom after a diplomatic visit interfered with plans to shoot in Budapest and the companies had to scramble to scout a new location in one week.

The campaign is running now on TV and online in Japan.
