SINGAPORE - Yahoo has launched the Yahoo Mobile Developer Awards, a competition for higher-education students in Singapore to build the best mobile widgets.

Yahoo launches widget competition for Singapore schools

The competition is designed to reinforce the web giant’s open technology strategy in the region and creates opportunities for younger developers to build innovative content on mobile phones that will in turn be used by commercial firms.

Yahoo has the support of four corporate backers – DBS Bank, Kellogg Asia, Malaysia Airlines, and UEEEU.com - for the initiative, and participating institutions include Nanyang Technological University, National University of Singapore, Nanyang Polytechnic, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Singapore Polytechnic and Temasek Polytechnic.

David Ko, MD and VP of Yahoo Connected Life in Asia-Pacific, said: “Aligned with Yahoo’s company-wide plan to rewire itself and open up assets to third-party publishers, developers and advertisers, this competition reinforces our commitment to open technologies.”

Yahoo’s Mobile Developer Platform, which was launched earlier this year, currently features more than 80 mobile widgets, built by developers globally.
