NEW ZEALAND - TV5Monde has launched an online service in New Zealand via a recently launched online TV platform, Ziln.

TV5 launches online in New Zealand
The French broadcaster will make its Pacific programming available free of charge to viewers exclusively within New Zealand.

In a statement, TV5Monde’s regional managing director, Alexandre Muller, said that the company was glad that Ziln’s launch “coincides with the next phase of our development in the Pacific region."

Ziln comprises a total of 22 channels, twelve of which are international. While TV5Monde will be available without payment, a spokesperson from the channel said that participating content providers were able to operate a discretionary paid subscription model.

The company, which is a partnership between online TV provider NetsideTV and e-cast Ltd, a video streaming service, is looking to achieve a penetration rate of 10 per cent within the coming six months. It is also reportedly developing alternative delivery methods via smatphones, open standard STBs and media centres.

In addition, Ziln is understood to be looking to introduce premium content, pay-per-view movies, and other downloadable material through digital rights management.

TV5Monde is planning to launch a news-feed service for Australasia at the end of the week.
