First mooted in 1996 by then Prime Minister, Goh Chok Tong, in his New Year’s Day rally, the Movement encourages Singaporeans to make commitments towards gracious living through simple acts of kindness in their daily lives.
The country’s National Courtesy Campaign, first launched in 1979, currently falls under the Singapore Kindness Movement’s care as well.
The SKM recently endorsed a student-led parody campaign to discourage office executives from reserving seats with tissue packets at food centres during peak lunch periods in the Central Business District.
The act of ‘chope-ing’ seats is a common practice among locals who would leave tissue packets at empty seats to stake their claim to the seats as they go off to buy their lunches. A further campaign was also launched at the end of November to encourage diners to return their food trays after eating.
