Spink replaces Murrell in CEO role at HBO Asia

ASIA-PACIFIC: HBO Asia has named Jonathan Spink as its new chief executive officer, replacing Dan Murrell, who returned to the US last year to pursue other opportunities.

Spink replaces Murrell in CEO role at HBO Asia

Spink is a near 20-year veteran of the cable and satellite TV industry, working in senior roles at Sky Europe and, more recently, at Liberty Media Corporation, where he was charged with setting up three sports channels in Japan.

Spink said that his main task would be to prepare the channel for future opportunities.

"HBO is a successful brand in Asia but we have to look at what's next. The region has gone through economic euphoria and crises, forming a new foundation. However, many industries are facing new challenges.

"For television, new possibilities are on the horizon, such as digitisation, which will allow for programming flexibility. We have to be prepared for when that arrives. We must push the boundaries because it is dangerous to be complacent," Spink said.

He added that HBO's success has been due to its strong programming line-up, including blockbuster movies and specially-produced series such as Sex and the City and Six Feet Under.

"We must have stuff like these award-winning shows and movie hits. It's the only way pay-TV channels can operate."
