Unusual venues for big events

A former army barracks, an orchid farm and a century-old pedestrian bridge are just a few of the venues available for regional event planners. By Gerardine Donough-Tan

Unusual venues for big events

VISITOR ATTRACTIONS AND
UNUSUAL SPOTS
Urban Fairways
Asia’s first indoor golf lounge, Urban Fairways Club Street location draws foreign firms to host client meetings and networking evenings for up to 30 people. The Full Swing Golf Simulator is the magnet. Leon Kantor, managing director, Terrapinn Capital Markets, says: “It was a great way to bring clients together in a fun and informal environment. They really enjoyed the
experience and it was a successful event.”

National Museum
Since reopening last December, the ‘new’ museum has attracted corporate events, product launches and media conferences through its blend of heritage and style for their functions. Some preferred locations are the Salon for between 100 and 130 guests, and Glass Atrium or Concourse for up to 250 people. The flexible Gallery Theatre doubles as a conference and exhibition venue. Events for HSBC, UBS and TAG Heuer have been held here recently.

Orchidville
Singapore’s largest orchid farm and nursery, Orchidville’s spacious grounds and recently
built rainforest-themed restaurant bring the ‘outdoor forest garden’ concept indoors.
Popular for company dinners and award ceremonies, it seats up to 450 guests for lunch
or dinner. Dining options include buffet, barbecue and formal, sit-down dinner (Chinese
and Western style) and cocktail parties.

Cavenagh Bridge
This is not a function venue, but this century-old pedestrian bridge across the Singapore River near Boat Quay can be used upon request – if event planners can win government approval from three agencies.
“This can take three to four months but is worth the effort because foreign delegates are
so impressed,” says Theresa Ho, director of business development at The Traveller DMC.

Aramsa Spas
This garden spa in Bishan Park hosts groups of 15 to 80 people for corporate meetings,
teambuilding, spa parties and outdoor presentations. Corporate retreats can end with a spa treatment, while teambuilding can be conducted in the park or indoors.
The function hall is currently being renovated and enhancements will be added.

F&B AND ENTERTAINMENT OUTLETS
Café del Mar
This upmarket venue on Sentosa’s Siloso Beach can hold groups of between 30 and 400 people. Sections are cordoned off for small groups or the entire venue can be hired, as Herbalife did for its 900 top distributors in July.
The organiser of a DHL corporate function says it is “a great venue, has fantastic ambiance as well as an enthusiastic team, which made the event a truly memorable one.”

The Arena
A new venue at Clarke Quay, The Arena combines a marble bar, wooden floor and cement stage with pyrotechnics in a 900 sqm Gothic interior. A favourite with media and PR agencies, it holds 800 people for cocktails and 350 people seated. Cisco Systems held its annual dinner and dance here. Its online Plan a Party page is popular with event planners.

Dempsey Hill
This former army barracks is now an eclectic mix of indoor and al fresco restaurants and bars. Part of the Tanglin Village complex of F&B outlets, tenants include: House, which has function rooms for corporate meetings and workshops alongside spa treatments; Red Sea Gallery; and Rain restaurant and bar that have drawn events from state-run broadcaster MediaCorp, Mercedes-Benz and Nokia.

Loof
Loof is a bar on a roof, albeit only three storeys above ground. Semi-exposed to the weather and without a well-demarcated seating plan, it draws creatives – or any host that dares to be different. Seating capacity is 150 people and roughly double that when in cocktail mode.

Vino Vino
This popular venue on the party strip at Mohammed Sultan Road specialises in product launches, meetings, teambuilding, wine appreciation talks and dinners.
Up to 60 guests can be seated indoors and another 50 people outdoors. Cocktail set-ups can cater for between 80 and 100 people. A regular customer uses wine quizzes and contests to make teambuilding fun, while wine talks-cum-dinners are appreciated by corporate guests.
