MEDIA: 'Insomnia' ads for night owls take to the air

MANILA: Selected television broadcasters, including Studio 23, have started airing so-called 'insomia' ads after the stations sign off for the night.

MEDIA: 'Insomnia' ads for night owls take to the air

The new TV advertising format, created by TBWA Santiago Mangada Puno, are similar to print ads, except the medium is the TV screen.

The agency said the trick was to tailor make the message to suit the medium. For instance, an Advil ad states: 'If you're still reading this instead of sleeping, you'll probably have a headache later.'

For Kish, a trendy furniture and lifestyle shop, the insomnia ad shows a comfortable bed with the message, 'Tossing and turning? You probably need a bed like this.' The ad also includes contact details for the shop.

Similar ads were created for Mister Donut and Banyan Tel.

Studio 23 and selected ABS CBN channels have started airing the ads, with the spots costings 30,000 pesos (US$580) for up to four hours, which is a fraction of regular TV advertising rates.
