CAREERS: What it's like to work for... cnbc asia-pacific
Who's the boss?: I report to Alexander Brown, president and chief executive officer of CNBC Asia-Pacific. How many staff?: We have 128 in total. Marketing responsibilities?: I'm responsible for overseeing the marketing department at CNBC Asia-Pacific and driving strategic branding, market development and the management of CNBC's online presence. I am also in charge of developing communications and interactive marketing strategies, promoting CNBC's sales and marketing efforts to trade media and cable affiliates and developing events to enhance brand awareness. Who's the competition?: We don't see any other TV network providing viewers with insights, analysis and real-time access to market data and indispensable business information. How do you get a job at CNBC?: I got this job when a former colleague, working as the general manager of marketing at CNBC in 1998, heard that I was looking for a job. She soon offered me the position of marketing manager. Department or office transfers?: Certainly. CNBC is very open to internal transfer and we do offer job posts to interested employees. Any training offered?: CNBC is part of a larger organisation - General Electric Company and Dow Jones. As such, training is seen as a very important part of HR development. I have attended two courses over the last year, namely, finance for non-finance managers and compliance training, both offered by GE. Pay and perks?: My boss might read this column, in which case I'll say the pay could be better. But, while pay and perks are important, I think the work environment is a big factor as well - after all, we spend more than two-thirds of our day at work. Can you imagine coming into a shabby work place? CNBC has an excellent work environment and the folks are very amiable and genuine. That makes the work place great, although work can be exhausting some days. On top of that, CNBC presents employment achievement awards on a quarterly basis to acknowledge the hard work of employees. It's all about recognition and rewards. Long hours?: Working hours are about as long as you want them to be. Business travel?: Yes, I travel on a regular basis, mainly within Southeast Asia.
