Uber launches first promotion in Hong Kong: ice cream delivery

HONG KONG - Taxi-hailing app Uber has debuted in Hong Kong with an ice-cream promotion that is also running in 143 other cities today including Singapore, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Taipei, Shenzhen, and Sydney.

This is the third year in a row that Uber has held this promotion, which is part of its below-the-line, CRM oriented promotional strategy. In October last year, the service even delivered kittens for "20 minutes of cuddling" in New York, Seattle and San Francisco as part of national cat day.

Today in Hong Kong consumers can download the app and for HKD$150 (US$19.35) receive five single cups of XTC Gelato delivered to their doorstep along with some "Uber swag". From our order, the swag included a huge T-Shirt, a mobile phone power bank and a pair of sunglasses.

The experience of ordering the ice cream was swift and easy. A click of the button and the ice cream van arrived under five minutes. However locating the ice cream itself proved challenging as the team seemed to be running ragged around Central Hong Kong. Teething problems with an unusual service on its first day is only to be expected.

Uber has paired up with Island Creamery in Singapore, Bubbles hand-made ice cream in Taipei, Haagen Dazs in Shenzhen and Bardot in Seoul to name a few.
