Wildlife is choking. Here's the ad

With over a million marine animals dying yearly from plastic, this AI-generated ad blitz in Seoul is an attempt to shock the public and policymakers into action.

Once a satirical lyric, “Life in plastic, it’s fantastic” is now an unfortunate tagline for the state of our planet. Plastic pollution has become less of a punchline, more of an apocalypse—choking oceans, killing wildlife, and infiltrating dinner plates in the form of microplastics. Over a million marine animals, including seabirds, sea turtles, and fish, die each year from our trash. Fun times.

To jolt the public out of eco-fatigue, WWF-Korea and creative agency Cheil have launched Animal Trash Fashion, a GenAI-powered OOH campaign that pairs high-impact visuals with a blunt message: wildlife is drowning in our waste. Think a sea turtle with a straw jammed in its nostril, a seal tangled in ghost nets, and an elephant wrapped in a shroud of plastic. Harrowing stuff, created without harming a single animal, just GenAI doing its dark magic.

On July 21st, a 20m by 60m full-screen takeover was unveiled in Seoul’s Gwanghwamun district, a bustling hub of government offices and media outlets, courtesy of Digital Chosun Ilbo, a major Korean online news publication that shared the campaign’s mission to promote public awareness of environmental issues.

“Thanks to AI, Animal Trash Fashion shows the urgency of the plastic crisis, where 79% of all plastics produced globally are discarded,” says Park Minhye, executive director of WWF-Korea. “Our hope is that this campaign sparks greater public engagement ahead of the United Nations Intergovernmental Negotiation Committee (INC-5) meeting on ending plastic pollution this August in Geneva. Real change requires the involvement of us all.”

Despite decades of “awareness,” some 14 million tonnes of plastic still flood our oceans each year. That raises an uncomfortable question: is anyone actually listening? If this campaign breaks through the noise and prompts real change, it might just be the most fashionable thing we’ve seen all year.
