Chinese web giants post surging revenues

BEIJING - Tencent, NetEase and Sina, three of China's most prominent internet brands, have posted significant revenue gains in their latest financial reports.

Tencent, operator of popular portal and messaging service QQ, announced third-quarter revenue of Rmb 2 billion (US$292.8 million) - a 91.4 per cent increase from the same period last year and a 26.5 per cent boost from its second quarter. Much of this surge can be attributed to its online ad revenue, which increased 72.2 per cent from the previous year to Rmb 249.1 million (US$36.4 million).

The company also announced that revenue from value-added services, such as online games, rose more than 95 per cent annually to Rmb 1.4 billion (US$205 million).

The trend can also be seen as online gaming host NetEase listed third-quarter revenues of Rmb 811.3 million (US$118.8 million). The figure is a 41.3 per cent year-on-year increase and 12.7 per cent quarter-on-quarter gain.

Specifically, online gaming revenue jumped 44 per cent from a year ago to Rmb 678.8 million (US$99.4 million). Advertising revenue also rose to Rmb 113.3 (US$16.6 million), up 31.7 per cent year-on-year.

The releases come one day after e-commerce giant Alibaba Group announced net income of Rmb 308.6 million (US$45.20 million) in its third-quarter - an annual gain of 49 per cent but a 22 per cent drop from its second quarter.
