
Scandals, major events and celebrities top Yahoo’s Year in Review list of the most searched terms for the year. The World Cup featured high on the list across Asia Pacific except in The Philippines, Indonesia and Taiwan.
In the US, the BP oil spill led the search term list, followed by celebrities Miley Cyrus, Kim Kardashian and Lady Gaga. With the World Cup, Americans also had a newfound fascination with soccer.
In Hong Kong, Yahoo found that the top three search terms were the Manila hostage incident, World Cup, and Shanghai World Expo.
Taiwanese were concerned with earthquakes, cram school sex scandal, and iPad and the iPhone 4, while the top three search terms in Korea were World Cup, The Warship 'Chunan', and Smart Phone.
Jack Neo topped Yahoo’s search terms in Singapore as people flocked online to find out the latest on his alleged extramarital affairs the local comedian and filmmaker. Sentosa ranked second while World Cup 2010 ranked third.
Indonesian celebrity Luna Maya, who was embroiled in a scandal, emerged the top search term in Indonesia, while Gempa Bumi (earthquake) and Keong Racun, a song on youtube, ranked second and third respectively.
Sports remain of utmost interest to Filipinos. The National Basketball Association (NBA) ranked number one in the top searches in Yahoo Philippines. The inauguration of President Aquino III and Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao ranked in second and third place respectively.
Vietnamese online users were most concerned with Ngô Bảo Châu, the price of gold. The World Cup ranked third.
