BITEC and IMPACT expansion plans to challenge arrival of central world

BANGKOK BITEC and IMPACT have both announced major expansion programmes as competition for conference and exhibition business reaches boiling point with the imminent opening of Central World Convention Centre.

IMPACT is to invest US$270 million in a 500-room five-star hotel and luxury shopping centre over the next two years. The trade and exhibition complex at Muang Thong Thani also recently opened a 3,500 sqm ballroom worth US$16 million. IMPACT managing director Paul Kanjanapas said the strategy behind the hotel and shopping plans was to extend the length of stay of trade-show visitors who want an all-inclusive arrangement close to the hall, as well as to boost convention and incentive business. "For groups of 500 people you need at least 300 rooms, but in the past we have been turning them away because we do not have the on-site facilities." BITEC will expand its exhibition space by up to 100,000 sqm to meet expected demand following the opening of Suvarnabhumi Airport and the future expansion of the skytrain mass-transit system to the east, said BITEC business development director Sarnit Karunyavanij. BITEC is 15km from the new airport and 12km from downtown Bangkok. Central World Convention Centre will open in Bangkok in June with 17,000 sqm of space.
