Big marketing battle among Macau hotels boosts advertising in HK

HONG KONG - According to admanGo, the total adspend in Hong Kong in May was US$371 million (HK$2.89 billion), moving up 13 per cent as compared to May 2010, and 3 per cent compared to April this year. A big marketing battle among the hotels in Macau may account for much of the change.

Macau hotels' marketing battle boosts HK's adspend in May

The total spending of Macau Hotel ads in Hong Kong reached a new peak in May with a year-on-year increase of 228 per cent. The key factor was the entry of Galaxy Macau Hotel, which accounted for 57 per cent of the industry’s total adspend.

Galaxy Macau Hotel spent US$3.6 million (HK$28 million) in advertising in May for the opening of its new hotel resorts, which included dominating the whole of Tsim Sha Tsui MTR station for a whole month.

The newcomer encouraged more marketing efforts from other hotels in Macau, leading to the significant year-on-year growth in adspend for the top five spending Macau hotels. Some hotels spent 20 times their usual budgets during May.

In terms of advertising revenue, all media in Hong Kong monitored had recorded an increase as compared to May last year. The total ad revenue of interactive media grew most significantly, by 29 per cent. Several popular websites have recorded substantial year-on-year growth, including Facebook (158 per cent), On.cc (147 per cent) and TVB.com (126 per cent).
