Yahoo Messenger goes mobile in Vietnam

HANOI – Viettel, Vietnam’s largest telecom operator, has partnered with Yahoo Asia and aggregator Miyowa to deliver Yahoo Messenger mobile solutions to over 40 million subscribers, with 100 compatible devices at launch.

Yvonne Chang, managing director of Yahoo Southeast Asia, said that very rapid growth in the mobile space makes Vietnam a very exciting and high-priority market for the company.

Tong Viet Trung, deputy general director of Viettel Group said, "This service has been successfully implemented in many countries in the world. In Vietnam, the number of Yahoo Messenger users is huge.”

According to Net Index 2009, internet research conduced by Yahoo and Kantar Media, Yahoo Messenger now has 17 million of the 23.2 million internet users in Vietnam. According to another survey by Viettel, 90 per cent of these users own a mobile phone and 50 per cent of these users are Viettel network subscribers.

“These figures demonstrate a tremendous potential for Yahoo Messenger to grow very fast, especially with the emergence of more mobile services provided by Yahoo and Viettel,” added Trung.
