Saatchis leads Asian charge at Australia's AWARD show

SYDNEY: Three agencies walked away with a combined four gold Pencils from the latest AWARD (Australasian Writers and Art Directors Association) awards, with Asia making a far stronger showing than in previous years.

Saatchi & Saatchi waved the brightest Asian flag at the 25th anniversary awards, with its Malaysian office taking home one of the gold Pencils given out that night, for its direct mail work with Toyota.

Saatchis offices from Singapore, Bangkok and China also walked away with silver and bronze medals.

In fact, the Saatchis group worldwide earned 18 gongs in total.

Singapore-based Equus Design also snared a gold pencil for its graphic design work.

The wins were a novelty for AWARD, which is Australian-based and typically dominated at the top end by Australian agencies.

"Asia really wants to shine on the world stage," Saatchis regional executive creative director Craig Davis said.

"There's so much opportunity in the region, some wonderful talent and a huge desire to do great work. Award-worthy ideas are now coming consistently from most Asian markets.

"A few years ago, Singapore was the only market that registered at AWARD. To see Thailand, Malaysia and China up there too is a huge credit to our teams and shows just how dynamic the region is."

The remaining gold gongs went to Australian agency Brown Melhuish Fishlock, one for its television campaign and another for its craft work on the Quest campaign.

New Zealand agencies also made their presence felt by landing 29 per cent of all awards. Saatchis New Zealand and Colenso BBDO Auckland each took home six gongs.

In Australia, DDB Sydney stood out with a win of five awards and the Campaign Palace bagged three.

The Publicis Mojo group meanwhile, in both Australia and New Zealand, locked up many of the awards for the prestigious television category.
