One-to-one Marketing: Direct choice - Playhouse Disney Channel mailer

At first I thought a Happy Meal had landed on my desk. As I opened the "big top" with hunger bubbling from my lips, I was met not with the stench of French fries, but the sight of juggling balls - courtesy of Playhouse Disney Channel. This was Jojo's Circus.

The mailer consisted of a box resembling a tent, a set of juggling balls, and an insert card that contained a letter and a CD. Jojo incidentally is the name of the six-year old clown in the show.

The boxed tent was colourful and impressive as a delivery mechanic, yet it lacked weight. Surely this big top from Disney deserved a weightier paper stock to support its towering sides? The concept was quite good.

It had a glossy fun-loving feel to it. Colleagues stopped by my desk, and rather than comment on my choice of shirt that day, directed their attention straight to the tent, and it wasn't long before the juggling balls were flying through the air.

Where the mailer did fall a bit flat was in the personalisation. The letter had the recipient labeled as "Dear Affiliate". Now, people may call me many a thing, but an affiliate? The CD had an intro to the show and channel, which is impressive and they make a point of highlighting the educational factors. Overall, this mailer delivered with impact and what Disney is known for ... magic, but underestimated the potential within that would have really had the drums rolling.
