CAREERS: Euro turns to e-learning as training budgets tighten

Euro RSCG has pooled the training budgets of its Asia-Pacific offices and spent the money on a centralised electronics-learning programme managed from Singapore.

The network's Asia-Pacific chief executive, Vincent Digonnet, said agencies had to find ways to train staff with less money since margins were being squeezed.

Digonnet said agencies generally spend their training budgets on short training courses, which often involved the added expense of airline tickets and hotel accommodation to fly staff to cities hosting the programmes.

Arguing that this was inefficient, Digonnet said such courses only benefited a select few, took people away from work, and were time-consuming and costly.

In looking for a more effective and economical way to teach literally hundreds of agency personnel spread across its various offices in Asia, Euro decided the solution lay with the internet. It opted to hire electronic learning company Icus to help it develop three 12-week courses in which chosen staff could access online with a password word and user name.

Courses cover customer relationship management, digital marketing and communication channel management.

Tutors come from the top ranks of the Euro RSCG network in the various disciplines.

To pass, students have to complete online tutorials and assignments as well as participate in online discussions.

The benefits are that these courses can be completed from home or work at times that suit participants, said Digonnet.

"These e-learning courses allow the vast majority of Euro's middle management to have training.

"It will also help bond agency staff in different offices because an online community is already being created since they are learning the same course and discussing ideas and helping one another over the web," he added.
