Asia demand for hi-tech gadgets seen recovering

ASIA-PACIFIC: Demand for the latest hi-tech consumer products, such as WAP and MP3-enabled mobile phones, personal digital assistants, and games consoles, appear to be recovering, according to an ACNielsen Regional Online Omnibus study.

The brighter outlook comes amid signs that the global economy is improving.

But Richard Eardley, executive director of ACNielsen International Research, said this was also due to the fact that the life cycle of hi-tech goods was much shorter than for other products.

"Last year, many people put off making major purchases because of the economic situation, but for things like mobile phones and computers, they can defer for only so long. It's not like a car, or a house or taking a long holiday. You have to replace them sooner than later," Eardley said.

The survey questioned 8,000 people in eight markets, including China, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and Australia.
