SE Asia dominates Facebook’s fastest-growing list

SOUTHEAST ASIA - Indonesia, India, Philippines, Thailand and Malaysia are among Facebook's 10 fastest growing markets according to recent research from Inside Facebook.

Majority of Facebook users come from SEA

According to June 2010 figures from the social media's Inside Facebook research data, the growth of the digital map is in large, heavily-populated countries whose populations are rapidly modernising.

Indonesia grew the  most, adding 1,190,600 new monthly active users (MAU) to a total of 25.9 million, followed by India, with 989,640 new MAU over June. The difference between the two nations is that  India's growth is still extremely volatile, swinging between a snail's pace to large gains from month to month.

The Philippines and Mexico come in third and fourth, respectively, and even with 8,000 miles separating the two countries, the demographies are similar in terms of population and Facebook penetration, with each adding over 800,000 MAU in June.

So popular is the social media among Filipinos that the Philippines' Supreme Court formally unveiled its Twitter and  Facebook accounts much to the delight of its netizens. Midas Marquez, administrator and spokesman of the court, told journalists that the tribunal opened the social media accounts because it wanted to be "closer to the people".

According to Marquez, the court's opening of Twitter and Facebook accounts was the brainchild of Chief Justice Renato Corona.
