Indoor Google Maps launches in Singapore, with shopping malls as promoters

SINGAPORE - Google has launched Indoor Google Maps for users of Android smartphones in Singapore, with several shopping malls are promoting the service to their clientele.

The feature provides detailed floor plans that automatically appear when users zoom in on a building for which indoor map data is available.

In certain locations, users will have the option of using the indoor ‘My Location’ feature to help them navigate their way inside. The familiar “blue dot” icon can indicate their approximate location, and when they move up or down a level in a building with multiple floors, the interface will automatically update to display which floor they are on.

Singapore is the second country in Asia to receive Indoor Google Maps, after Japan. The service is also available in selected locations in Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, the UK, the US, Sweden and Switzerland.

Indoor Google Maps has initially partnered with several shopping destinations in Singapore, including 313@somerset, ION Orchard, Mandarin Gallery, Ngee Ann City, Paragon, Marina Bay Sands and Suntec City. Steven Goh, executive director of Orchard Road Business Association, noted that maps of indoor spaces will allow shoppers to enjoy a more seamless shopping experience.
