Thai pay-TV sees two more channels

BANGKOK - Two local entertainment firms – Media of Medias and GMM Grammy - are set to roll out their first channels on Thailand's growing pay-TV industry.

Media of Medias will launch Media Channel, which features reruns of soap operas from free-to-air station Channel 7. GMM Grammy will launch Fan TV, a channel dedicated to Thai country music.

Media of Medias is also hoping to introduce a further three channels in 2009 if Media Channel is successful. Chief executive Charlotte Donavanik is expecting ad revenues of between 80 and 100 million baht (US$2.3-2.9 million) for Media Channel’s first year of operations.

GMM Grammy will be hoping Fan TV will raise its revenues to 50 million baht from 35 million baht currently, which the firm earns from digital content. Grammy will also hope to launch another four channels in the coming months.

Donavanik further predicted that adspend in pay-TV is set to double this year to 300 million baht ($8.8 million) but still trails adspend in free-to-air TV, which amounts to 50 billion baht ($1.47 billion).

Thailand’s burgeoning pay-TV industry is benefiting from a Broadcasting Act that was enacted in March, which allows content providers and cable operators to gain revenue from advertising.
