TCEB and AOT launch pilot MICE immigration lane at Suvarnabhumi

BANGKOK Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) and Airports of Thailand (AOT) have launched a pilot run of the much-discussed fast-track immigration lane aimed at reducing queuing time for conference and exhibition visitors travelling through Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport.

The ‘MICE Fast-Track Service’ is part of TCEB’s ‘Thai Team’ initiative that aims to ease
delegates through the immigration process with a passport pre-approval service that begins at the arrivals gate, through the customs check-point, luggage claim and local transport.

TCEB has also set-up an information counter to promote MICE and other related information for delegates.

Delegates from the Bangkok International Conference on Avian Influenza 2008, which was
held from January 23-25, were the first to benefit from the MICE Fast-Track Service TCEB says its next step will be to continue to work with the Immigration Bureau to develop a permanent ‘MICE lane’.

TCEB’s newly appointed president, Natwut Amornvivat, said: “Strengthening Thai Team is an important fundamental to leverage Thailand’s MICE industry.
“We need to build our potential in every facet that is involved with MICE in order to push growth for the industry and to place us as a preferred destination for MICE in Asia”.

However, the MICE lane was met with doubt from some industry players who questioned
whether it would have a knockon effect on other immigration lanes in the airport.

One source said: “I hope they do not convert existing lanes into MICE channels and merely
move a bottleneck from one lane to another. My experience of dedicate MICE channels has
not been rosy.”
