By Stephanie Roberts BANGKOK The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has moved closer toward establishing a dedicated convention and exhibition bureau. TAT deputy governor Ms Juthamas Siriwan admitted such a bureau was "very likely" as the Asia Pacific conference, exhibition and incentive (CEI) market was so competitive that a bureau was essential to ensure Thailand becomes a major player in the sector. This will be the first time Thailand will operate a special convention and exhibition bureau. Ms Juthamas attributed the timing of the decision to the end of a rift between the private sector and the TAT. "It has taken a while for stronger trust to be built between the private sector and TAT but now we have a stronger, more dynamic focus on working together," she said. "We are trying sustain and grow our base of visitors while at the same time going after higher-yield tourism, such as the lucrative CEI market." It remains uncertain who will fund the bureau. The Thailand Incentive and Convention Association (TICA) has pledged a total of 12million baht (US$300,000) and has asked the government to match this. TAT intends to initiate a one-stop-shop for corporate buyers, as well as develop a mechanism for marketing and branding Thailand throughout the CEI market. TAT and TICA have also announced a special joint promotion - Amazing Meeting - should new events be confirmed, with deposit, during the validity of the campaign.
