MiTV challenges Astro for M'sian pay-TV viewers

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's second pay-TV station, MiTV, will be launched with 50 channels in December, rivaling the only existing pay-TV player Astro All Asia Networks.

MiTV will be operated by Grafimatix, which holds one of the three pay-TV licences in the country. The newcomer did not reveal its programming line-up except to say that it would provide a broad spectrum of international channels and vernacular packages to suit local tastes.

The channel, which will initially launch the service in the mid- to high-income Klang Valley residential district, has ambitions to extend the operation to East Malaysia within 18 months after the initial rollout.

Citing pay-TV penetration of about 25 per cent, MiTV claimed the market offered strong upside potential for the newcomer. MEC Malaysia managing director Margaret Au-Yong MiTV's success would hinge on content and its pricing policy.
