KLCC prepares for congress

KUALA LUMPUR The Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre management team is gearing up for its largest event of the year, a major medical congress.

In November, the centre will host the 18th FIGO 2006 World Congress of Gynaecology and Obstetrics. Up to 10,000 delegates are expected to attend the international event. Mark Suppiah, director of operations, AOS Conventions and Events (PCO for FIGO 2006), said: "The Centre is an ideal venue for this event due to its facilities and central location with sufficient hotels to cater for large numbers of delegates." The KLCC team intends to build upon the success of 2005 this year. Peter Brokenshire, general manager, Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, said: " The centre has achieved a level and mix of business that surprised even us." The centre held 225 events attended by 790,000 people in its first six months after opening in mid-June 2005. Currently, there are 400 bookings for events between now and 2012. Jenny Salsbury, the centre's director of marketing and sales, said the sales team and overseas representatives will continue to actively promote their facilities. This will be supplemented by a marketing partnership with four other convention centres under the 'All Corners of the World' banner.
