India: Chaplin returns to Cherry Blossom after lost decade

MUMBAI: Shoe polish brand Cherry Blossom is reviving its decade-old advertising campaign, featuring a Charlie Chaplin look-alike.

Anisha Motwani, vice-president, Euro RSCG, which handles the ad account, said: "We wanted to cut through clutter. It had been extremely successful in the past and the brand had its best phase with the campaign."

The campaign, highly popular when it first went on air, was shot to resemble the comedian's films.

The agency and client conducted research, which proved that Chaplin was still relevant and, in fact, among the top five comedians across age groups.

Nearly 25 per cent of the respondents said they saw Chaplin in some form over the last year. "The most important things were the values he stands for: despite his 'tramp' connotation, he's perceived to be an affluent character and a winner, without aggression or confrontation, along with a certain sense of humour."
