HKCEC to grow exhibition space

HONG KONG The Trade Development Council (TDC) has submitted a proposal to the Hong Kong Government to expand the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC), in a much-needed expansion. Owner TDC plans to rebuild the Atrium link connecting Phases I and II of HKCEC, adding an additional 19,400sqm, or 42 per cent, of exhibition space. The development cost of the project is estimated at HK$1.2billion (US$153.9million). Construction is likely to start in early 2006 and completed within the first half of 2009, by which time market rival AsiaWorld Expo will have been operational for over three years. TDC executive director Fred Lam said the additional spaces, equivalent to 1,000 more standard exhibitor booths, would be an essential medium-term solution to the growing space demands of Hong Kong's largest fairs. He noted the lack of space had kept thousands of exhibitors on waiting lists for Hong Kong's popular fairs. Creating space for these exhibitors could raise five TDC mega-fairs to number one internationally in terms of exhibitor numbers.
