HK public service ad Puppet wins New York honour

NEW YORK: A Hong Kong public service television commercial has won a silver trophy at the Mercury Awards, helping debunk the long-held view that Government ads are boring.

The 30-second TVC, titled "puppet

was designed to encourage families and schools to join forces with the police to fight youth crime. The storyline was created by PMP Advertising creative director David Wong, directed by Tom Barnes and produced by C.F. Ho of Directors Network Asia Productions.

Ho acknowledged that Government ads have come under fire in the past for being dull, but he said "puppet

was different. "This one has a good idea in it. And a lot of thought was put into all aspects of the creation of the TVC, including the shooting. From time to time, the Government tenders projects to agencies and the difference is highly visible in that the overall quality has allowed it to stand out."
