Greater China: Sarft orders TV stations to step up kids shows

BEIJING: The State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (Sarft) has ordered all 31 provincial TV stations to introduce new channels targeted at kids by 2006 in a bid to improve 'ethical and moral standards' across the country.

Sarft is also looking at establishing film animation companies over the next five to 10 years as part of efforts to improve programming for children and the youth segment.

The new kid's channels will enable TV stations and advertisers to reach the country's 367 million children, which account for 28 per cent of the population.

Optimedia China chief executive, Steven Chang, said: "The launch of children's channels is definitely a new income stream for TV stations. However, there are few professional production houses and animation companies producing TV shows for kids. If the quality isn't good enough, it will affect the rating and advertisers' confidence."

Media specialists also noted that Chinese authorites had issued directives to all stations to curtail airtime allotted to dramas and films featuring violent content.

Authorities have also ordered stricter controls over the production and importation of TV dramas of a violent nature and have banned the airing of such programmes during primetime.
