Fortune is celebrating its 70th anniversary with an auction of
classic 1930s cover posters, proceeds of which will be donated to the
Make-A-Wish Foundation, a children's charity.
The auction is the finale to a 10-day anniversary event, which launched
in Singapore in mid-February, before moving online and ending with a
gala dinner and auction in Hong Kong later this month.
The covers are profiled online on Yahoo! Broadcast, christies.com and
fortune.com in an online restrospective commemorating the
anniversary.
In Singapore, the celebrations kick off with a preview of the 10 posters
at a gala dinner; three of these will be auctioned live by Christie's
that evening, and silent bids will be taken on the remaining seven.
The Hong Kong auction and gala will incorporate the silent bids from the
Singapore event.
In addition, one original copy of the first issue of Fortune will be
awarded to the highest bidder.
The Hong Kong event will subsequently be broadcast by Yahoo! Broadcast,
allowing viewers around the world to see the event in streaming
video.
"The theme of the evening will be 'The Future of Business'," said
Fortune Asia publisher Andrew Butcher.
"During Fortune's early years, the magazine commissioned many of the
20th century's greatest painters and illustrators to produce cover art
to document the modern era.
"By showcasing the beauty of these covers, we are able to reflect upon
moments of our heritage as we celebrate the promises of tomorrow."
The online retrospective and subsequent auction broadcast, he added,
utilised Internet technology which "allows us to put our emphasis firmly
on the future".
The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants wishes to children with terminal or
life-threatening illnesses; proceeds from the event will directly
benefit children in Asia.
Fortune's 10-day 70th anniversary celebrations are supported by four
partners: Christie's Hong Kong, the Ritz-Carlton Hong Kong, Veuve
Cliquot and Yahoo.
