Or it may have just been a case of all three for Yellow Brick Road managing director Rene Menezes. Billboards and full page newspaper ads were so yesterday and skywriting too difficult. So Menezes went online to propose to his girlfriend on internet portal Yahoo. "I basically wanted to propose in a way that she would remember for the rest of her life. Some blokes spend loads on the ring so that their lovely women get bragging rights at parties. Lee Yen will always be the only one who can say, 'I was the first person ever to be proposed to on Yahoo, in front of hundreds of thousands of people'," says Menezes.
Diary reckons it's Menezes who's smitten - by the power of the web. Imagine the kick of saying, "I proposed in front of some 445,000 Malaysians?" Possibly, many more, seeing how incredibly viral the medium really is.
The downside was that Lee Yen could have said no. Menezes obviously calculated the risk of this and duly made her aware of it. "If you don't say 'yes', I'm going to be one seriously regionally embarrassed dude," he noted in his proposal, which included a disclaimer: "Diamond depicted in the picture is for illustration purposes only and may differ a bit, maybe slightly, actually tremendously, from the one you will get when you come see me downstairs ... but it's quite nice."
Well aware that the devil's in the details, Menezes took note of Lee Yen, an avid surfer, overlooking the proposal. He got a mutual friend to call Lee Yen with the casual enquiry, "Why is your name all over Yahoo?"
Over at his computer, a nervous Menezes waited, wiping his sweaty palms and nursing his cold feet the day the proposal went out.
The online proposal may have overshadowed the fact that Menezes wasn't too keen on the kneeling bit - "I'm not the fittest bloke in the world," he told Diary, while happily reporting that Lee Yen had said "yes".
Incidentally, Menezes' use of Yahoo was no coincidence. His agency was recently appointed Yahoo's media sales representative for Malaysia. Which now has Diary wondering if Menezes got a great rate for the proposal.
