CONNECTIONS: Taiwan sees web adspend tumble to $25m in 2001

TAIPEI: Taiwan's internet adspend dropped 4.6 per cent last year from NT$870 million (US$24.9 million) to NT$830 million, but the industry is not alarmed by the decline.

"We're doing a lot better than the traditional media,

said Charlene Hung, marketing director of Yahoo! Kimo. "Last year, newspapers and TV were hurt badly by the economic downturn."

The adspend data was released by Market Intelligence Center (MIC), the marketing arm of the Government Institute for Information Industry. MIC predicted a rebound this year, with 34 per cent growth pushing online advertising past the NT$1 billion mark.

Hung is also optimistic. "There is great potential for internet ads because its base is still small. Internet adspend is less than two per cent of the total Taiwan (advertising) market,

she said, adding that Taiwan's net population was still growing and broadband access would double it.
