Job title: Marketing director, Sing Tao Newspaper Group
What is your greatest work achievement?
Prior to joining Sing Tao, I worked at a company where we had a tough business target, which we had to meet within nine months. I worked with a strong team and we came out with marketing programmes to achieve the required results. There was job satisfaction in gaining the trust of our demanding business partner, and in building friendships along the way.
What would be your dream brand to work on and why?
I would like to work for a new product, building and creating the brand from scratch. I'd also like to work for companies, which are passionate about brand-building.
What would you do if you weren't in marketing?
I probably would not be working, opting to study overseas or travel.
What was your big break?
Getting my first job. The position allowed me to gain experience in various aspects of the marketing field. More importantly, it was a fun working environment, which lead to my interest and dedication to marketing.
Who was your mentor and how did this person influence you?
I am fortunate to have worked with many great bosses. At my first job, my boss and those above me were very professional. I learnt from their management and people-handling skills. I also helped set up an office with a direct marketing professional. The owner's passion for work and his "can do attitude is something that I remember and respect.
Is there a secret to your success?
As a marketing professional, it's critical to be responsive and creative.
Keep observing, learning from others and from your own experiences. Teamwork and a "can do attitude are essential.
How do you handle difficult clients?
I listen to their concerns and try to look at things from their point of view.
What advice would you give to the next person to do your current job?
Ensure you are interested in the product and willing to be challenged.
What are you currently reading that will help you in your job?
Various newspapers and magazines, including local and regional titles.
Who is the business person you most admire and why?
Richard Branson and (local media tycoon) Jimmy Lai, for their 'guts', creativity, and devotion to their businesses.
