FRESH GRADUATE LOOKS FOR HELP IN FINDING JOBS

Q: I'm a fresh graduate (business faculty), from a university in Australia, without any prior working experience. Having arrived back in Hong Kong a few months ago, I have sent over 70 application letters and have had only about 10 interviews for positions such as marketing officer or marketing assistant, but have not been invited back for a second interview. I want to get into the marketing or advertising related industry. I am finding it very difficult to find a job here since competition is really keen. What do you think I should do to increase my chance of getting a job?

A: Frankly speaking, what kind(s) of person(s) are these companies looking for?

Will it be easier for me to find a job in the industry somewhere outside Hong Kong? Look forward to your professional advice.

ARichard Broadhurst, senior consultant, Ambition, said "At this time many companies are budgeting and planning for next year. Individuals are also unwilling to switch jobs and forego their annual bonuses. This means there is less of a focus on recruitment which in turn translates into fewer vacancies and will go some way to explaining the difficulties you are facing when it comes to finding something suitable. The key here is not to accept the first thing that comes along but to be patient and wait for the right opportunity.

"For entry level positions competition will always be stronger. Your chances will be maximised if you are based in Hong Kong and speak Cantonese as without these companies will always go for individuals with the local skills. It may be that your lack of experience in the Hong Kong market is somewhat of a hindrance but this should not present a major hurdle for junior level roles.

"Have you considered positions with advertising agencies as means to entering the advertising or marketing industry? These organisations are always looking for keen and eager people who are willing to work hard to establish themselves. This is a very real possibility and something you should consider as it could be the door you are looking for.

"In terms of looking for job outside of Hong Kong, it will be harder to find something as you will face stiff competition from candidates who are based in those markets and who possess the local language skills.

"Congratulations though; 10 interviews is pretty good going. It sounds like you are motivated in your job search and have a background that is attractive to prospective employers. This is a good sign and one that should give you encouragement. You should definitely continue with your job search activities as they seem to be paying off. I would say it's just a matter of time before you progress to the 2nd and final round stages of an interview process. Good luck!"
