Cable TV fights off rivals for Fifa rights

HONG KONG - Cable TV chiefs claim its too early to gauge the impact the company's retention of the broadcast rights for the 2010 Fifa World Cup will have on on its advertising revenue, which was hit when rival Now TV snatched the English Premier League (EPL) rights for US$200 million last year.

The deal gives Cable TV’s i-Cable network the rights to the U17 and U20 World Cups in Korea and Canada respectively, the Women’s World Cup in China in September, the Fifa Beach Soccer World Cup and all the lead-up qualifying and friendly games to football’s showcase event.

“We expect it to have a strong positive effect on the consolidation and growth of our subscriber base, but in terms of advertising revenue, it’s too early to make a projection,” said a Cable TV spokesperson.

The deal marks the third successive time Cable TV has acquired the broadcast rights for the World Cup.
