Asia City Publishing Group considers sale

HONG KONG - Asia City, the publishing group behind a raft of free city living titles, is weighing up its options for business expansion, which include a possible sale. The publisher has hired an undisclosed investment bank to advise on its next move.

“We may list, but a trade sale is fairly likely,” said co-founder and managing director Steve Freeman.

With the business having tripled in size over the past four years, Freeman said he felt that now was an opportune time to look at a partnership. “We’re trying to expand and build the business in the best way we can,” Freeman explained. “There’s no reason why our magazines can’t be in 10 or more markets and have multiple products.”

Freeman noted that this was the first time the group had gone to the lengths of hiring an adviser. There was no preset selling price, he said, adding: “We will consider anyone who wants to talk.”

Founded in 1989 by Freeman, Greg Duncan and Gretchen Worth, Asia City Publishing Group’s eight titles include HK and The List in Hong Kong, IS in Singapore, BK in Bangkok, KL in Kuala Lumpur, SH in Shanghai, and Where in Hong Kong, Singapore and Macau. Duncan and Worth currently run the company’s Singapore and Bangkok offices respectively.
