Al Jazeera eyes Asian cities for global news offer

Arab satellite channel Al Jazeera will start broadcasting live from Asia-Pacific next year as part of its plans to take on the global might of CNN and the BBC with its own free-to-air English-language news channel.

"We feel there is room for an English-language news channel that is not based out of one of the major Western countries," Nigel Parsons, managing director of Al Jazeera International said at the Casbaa conference in Hong Kong. Al Jazeera, whose Arabic service has gained worldwide recognition for its coverage from the Middle East, intends to start broadcasting a worldwide service at the end of next year from studios in Washington, London, Doha and an Asian hub, which will be in either Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur or Singapore. Parsons said there was a reciprocal desire from Asia's Muslims for news from across the continent, but stressed that the new 24-hour channel was aiming for global appeal with no particular target audience in mind. "There is a slightly different agenda from the Arabic channel," he said. "We will be a world channel." A decision on the Asian site, which will broadcast live four hours each day, is expected within the month.
