The regional carrier, which Singapore Airlines owns, has forecast that by 2005, approximately 15 per cent of its sales will come via the website.
To book tickets online, people need to register with Silkair.net by providing contact details, such as fixed line and mobile phone numbers, and email addresses.
They are then automatically made members of the Kris Flyer loyalty programme, which means they can use the same user name and password for the Silkair.net and Singapore Airlines' site Singaporeair.com.
Automatically signing people up for both makes sense because consumers want to avoid having multiple user names and passwords, according to Ken Mandel, managing director of CCG.XM, which created the Silkair.net and the Singaporeair.com websites.
Mandel said the Silkair.net website focuses on leisure travellers. He added Silk Air's focus on holiday makers means its site can provide more destination information, including details on tourist attractions, festivals, restaurants and bars.
